MANASQUAN, N.J. (July 14, 2014) � The public is welcome to attend a free reading of the new musical "Battleship Potemkin" at Algonquin Arts Theatre on Monday, July 21 at 7 p.m.

The first title to be featured in the freshly launched New Works Reading Series, this Equity-approved reading and sing-through will feature professional actors including special guests from the New York Gilbert & Sullivan Players.

With music by Eric Allaman and libretto by Jeffrey Couchman, "Battleship Potemkin" is musically directed by Micah Young and is a through-composed musical inspired by Sergei Eisenstein's landmark silent film (1925).

This is the story of a young sailor named Alyosha, his shipmates and his family, all of them entangled in tragic events of the abortive 1905 Russian revolution. It is a tale of everyday people battling oppression. In their passionate struggle, Alyosha and his friends and loved ones embody the resilience of the human spirit.

The reading is presented by Algonquin Arts Theatre in association with The York Theatre (New York, N.Y.). Advance ticket reservations are not required, but can be made by calling the Box Office at 732-528-9211 from 12-6 p.m. weekdays or 12-4 p.m. Saturday.
