The World Famous Glenn Miller Orchestra to Perform at Algonquin Arts

September 8, 2008

On Saturday, September 20, 2008, Algonquin Arts in Manasquan will be featuring one of the best-known big bands in existence, The World Famous Glenn Miller Orchestra. With its unique personality and jazz sound, the Glenn Miller Orchestra is sure to please audiences of all ages.

The original Glenn Miller Orchestra was formed in 1937. They had numerous hits including Chattanooga Choo-Choo, Moonlight Serenade, Ive Got a Gal in Kalamazoo, Tuxedo Junction, American Patrol, In the Mood, Pennsylvania 6-5000, and many more. At various times, their lead singers included Frank Sinatra, Rosemary Clooney, and Anita ODay. In 1942, at the peak of his career, Miller joined the war effort, feeling that he could better serve those in uniform. He performed tirelessly for over two years for our American soldiers. Then, on December 15, 1944, as a Major in the United States Army, Captain Glenn Miller was sent to fly from the United Kingdom to Paris to play music for the soldiers who had recently liberated Paris. On his way there, he disappeared over the English Channel and was never found.

After Millers death, the orchestra was disbanded for several years but then reformed. The present Glenn Miller Orchestra has been touring consistently for over fifty years, playing an average of 300 live dates a year all around the world. Glenn Millers trademark was a band with personality and under the direction of trombonist Larry OBrien, that heritage lives on. In addition to OBrien, the World Famous Glenn Miller Orchestra features sixteen talented musicians and two vocalists. To this day, the orchestra continues to perform with the same timeless style as the original Glenn Miller Orchestra performed in the 1930s and 40s.

The World Famous Glenn Miller Orchestra will be at Algonquin Arts on Saturday, September 20, 2008 at 8 pm. Tickets are $38 for adults and $36 for seniors and students. Group rates are available.
