Cooking, music at the Algonquin Arts

By Karen Meister

A fine tribute was given at the Algonquin Arts Theatre to the ever-popular mariner and explorer Christopher Columbus on Saturday evening.

It was performed majestically by The Orchestra of St. Peter by the Sea, conducted by the maestro, Father Alphonse Stephenson. It was an evening of Italian favorites from Father Alphonse’s delicious home-cooked recipes that he shared to the sounds of Italian music and song.

The music of Mendleson, Verdi and Puccini resonated throughout the theatre with such clarity and beauty that the listeners were in complete awe. Throw in some Italian humor by Father Alphonse, and you have one of the most delightful evenings possible.

Father Alphonse also introduced three magnificent vocalists who sang several Italian arias with such grace and style. Edward Perretti, tenor, was lauded by a comparison to a great bottle of wine that just gets better and better. Maria Zito- Kaufman gave a spectacular performance with her exceptional voice that enraptured the audience, and Thad Shirey enthralled the group with his strong, dramatic baritone ability.

The Orchestra of St. Peter is comprised of some 47 professional musicians who make several appearances at various venues, mainly in New Jersey and New York, throughout the year. This marks the eighth season for the orchestra’s appearance in Manasquan.

Their collaboration is truly a masterpiece and is very deserving of repeated praise and admiration. They are currently recording a new Christmas CD, their tenth to date. Of course, any mention of the Orchestra includes its charismatic conductor, Father Alphonse, who leads the group in all its glory.

Father Alphonse was been involved in the formation of the orchestra, as well as founding the Festival of the Atlantic on Point Pleasant Beach. It has become New Jersey’s largest outdoor music festival, with audiences traveling from all over the state.

If you missed this entertaining concert, there is still an opportunity to attend the next two performances by the orchestra. Viennese New Year 2010 will be at the Algonquin on Sunday, Jan. 3 at 3 p.m., and will feature the music of Mozart and Strauss.

Another concert will be performed on April 24, 2010, at 8 p.m. This performance is called My Fair Lady, with Lerner and Lowe’s musical score. Both concerts are sure to be sold out, due the popularity and professionalism of the musicians.

What wonderful holiday gifts to give family members and, or friends. They will certainly have an enjoyable experience and a life-long memory.
